Research on Learner Evaluations of Online Chinese Courses

Abstract

To understand learners' experiences and feedback regarding online Chinese courses, and to optimize and promote the development of such courses, this study analyzed learners' attitudes and emotional expressions based on review data from Coursera and MOOC platforms. Employing J.R. Martin's Appraisal Theory and the LDA topic model, the research revealed that learners generally provide positive evaluations of online Chinese courses, demonstrating high levels of learning interest and positive emotions. The findings offer data-driven support for the instructional design and content optimization of online Chinese courses, providing guidance for enhancing teaching quality and student satisfaction. The application of the LDA model further uncovered that international students' evaluations focus on three dimensions: emotional experience, course content, and teacher-student interaction. This also serves as a reference for other beginners in selecting suitable courses. The innovative aspect of this study lies in integrating appraisal theory with topic modeling, offering methodological insights for evaluating the quality of online courses in the field of International Chinese Language Education.
