Abstract

The technological transformation in the digital intelligence era has imposed new requirements on foreign language learning approaches, yet empirical research on the transformation of learning approaches among non-universal language majors in local universities remains scarce. This study employs Biggs' (1987) Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) as the research instrument, combined with questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews, to systematically investigate the current state of learning approaches among 89 Japanese majors at Q University, a local institution. The findings reveal that: First, students predominantly adopt deep learning approaches, yet examination-oriented surface learning remains prevalent, presenting a structural characteristic of "dominance and coexistence." Second, learning approaches demonstrate non-linear dynamic evolution across grades, with the sophomore to junior years identified as the critical transition period from surface to deep learning. Third, deep learning levels show a significant positive correlation with Japanese language proficiency levels, serving as the core variable distinguishing high-achievers from average learners. Fourth, the application of digital intelligence technologies exhibits a characteristic of "high frequency but superficial use"—while students widely utilize various tools, their usage primarily remains at the information retrieval level, with a notable technological application gap between teachers and students. Based on these findings, this paper proposes systematic countermeasures to promote deep learning transformation from three dimensions: resource integration at the institutional level, pedagogical guidance from teachers, and autonomous learning by students, providing empirical evidence and practical references for foreign language teaching reform in local universities.
